cooking, baking, and a home in the making

Old Cookbooks + Apple Krunch

When I was younger and still lived at home I tried having a “Sunday Baking Day”. I probably only actually baked 2 Sundays each month, but that’s pretty good if you ask me.

I was really lucky that my mom liked cooking. We had a ton of cookbooks in our cupboard and I always had something new to try. I always remembered one cookbook in particular, though. It was a school fundraiser cookbook where parents and other relatives submitted recipes for the book. It was for Sparta, MI so I knew it had to belong to my Dad.

The last time I was visiting MI, I mentioned to my Dad I saw a fundraiser cookbook in an antique store that reminded me of the one we had growing up. He said he still had one of those and I asked, “Is it white with brown binding?!” He pulled it out of the cupboard and IT WAS! It was the exact one I had been thinking of.

We went through it and he pointed out all the recipes that were submitted by my relatives. Most were by my great aunt and a couple were by my great grandma.

What I also loved were the little notes my grandma (my dad’s mom) left in the book.

I usually baked cookies from this book, but since the weather has been chilly here in Chicago and really getting me pumped up for fall, I decided to make my great grandma’s Apple Krunch recipe. How fun is that? I’ve never met her, but I get to make one of her recipes. LOVE IT!

Here is the recipe (I don’t even have to type it out for you!):

You just grease a baking dish. Peel and slice the apples and place them in the dish.

Mix the melted butter with the dry ingredients and crumble it over the top with your fingers. Then just pop it in the oven!

This was so easy and SO delicious. It was exactly what I was looking for. Basically a really simple apple cobbler, but with a more sugary topping.
